No5 Barristers' Chambers - Excellence is at the heart of everything we do.
Background

Louis Austin

Call: 2025

Louis undertook his pupillage from October 2024 with No5 Chambers under the supervision of Mugni Islam-Choudhury.

Louis’ practise is focused in the main on Employment and Personal Injury instructions. He undertakes instructions in both for parties on either side of litigation and acts at all stages of the Tribunal or court process from pre-action advice through to final hearings. He is equally comfortable being involved with a case throughout its lifetime, as he is being instructed solely to represent the parties interest at final hearing.

Prior to commencing his pupillage Louis undertook the BPC at the University of Law in Bristol. While there he worked with the Employment Tribunal Litigant In Person Support Service, running sessions aimed at providing information to Litigants in Person and the opportunity for them to ask questions about the tribunal process.

Before moving to Birmingham to join No5, Louis was involved with the administration of a Brass Band in the South West, and still enjoys attending competitions with them and keeping up to date with their events. Outside of work Louis enjoys cooking, having worked in a kitchen for several months prior to commencing the bar course. As well as this he has previously enjoyed playing football and cricket for different sports clubs and now enjoys a game of squash or a frame of pool.

Expertise

Employment

Louis has experience conducting multi-day final hearings in the employment tribunal, taking instruction in matters on behalf of both the Claimant and the Respondent, dealing with liability and remedy. He represents parties at all stages in the litigation process, with experience in case management and open preliminary hearings, judicial mediation, and final merits hearings, whilst also assisting in case progression outside of these.

He has also recently assisted in Employment Appeal Tribunal hearings, and in Interim Relief Applications.

Louis has also acted in employment related claims and service provider claims, proceeding in the county court. He has also acted in Equality Act 2010 matters before Regulatory Tribunals. His work in this area has involved the drafting of pleadings and appeals, and appearing at substantive hearings.

Personal Injury

Louis has begun growing his practice in Personal Injury, appearing in various County Courts on behalf of both Defendants and Claimants. He frequently acts on behalf of parties in involved in a range of different circumstances from which liability arises, acting at all stages of litigation from case management and allocation up to and including trials.

He undertakes instructions for final hearings at both the small claim, fast track and intermediate track allocation for cases covering a range of liability and quantum related issues.

Louis is seeking to develop the breadth his paper-based practise, and has drafted pleadings in Occupiers Liability, Employers Lability and Discrimination cases. As well as this he has undertaken liability and quantum advice both prior to and during litigation in multi-track cases and is looking to continue to develop his practise in providing ongoing assistance with such cases.
