No5 Barristers’ Chambers are pleased to announce that His Majesty the King has appointed Abid Mahmood to be a Judge of the Upper Tribunal, Immigration and Asylum Chamber, on the advice of the Lord Chancellor and the Senior President of Tribunals.

Abid Mahmood, who will be known as Upper Tribunal Judge Mahmood, had formed and headed the Immigration Group at No5 (2008). He was also the Head of the Court of Protection Group and a member of the Family and Business and Property Groups at No5. Prior to his appointment, he had been a fee paid FTT Judge (2006), a Recorder (2008), Deputy Upper Tribunal Judge (2015) and a Nominated Judge of the Court of Protection (2020).

The Upper Tribunal is a superior court of record and Abid Mahmood will sit in London and across the United Kingdom, including in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast. Abid Mahmood will also continue to sit as a Recorder in the Crown, County and Family Courts and remains a Nominated Judge of the Court of Protection.
