No5 Barristers’ Chambers are pleased to announce that a former medical practitioner has joined its ranks after successfully completing his pupillage.
The now dual-qualified Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, who started his medical career in the Royal Army Medical Corps, practising in both the Army and in the civilian world, will practise from within the personal injury and clinical negligence groups.
Neil has more than a decade of experience as a doctor, having specialised in orthopaedics and major trauma. He also held the position of Honorary Consultant Trauma Co-ordinator for the Major Trauma Service at University Hospitals Birmingham.
During his clinical career, Neil was actively involved in research, which has been published on numerous occasions by international peer review journals. He was a member of the Plastics Operative Workload in Major Trauma Centres (POW-MTC), UK Wound management in Open Lower Limb Fractures (UK WOLLF), and UK Fixation of Distal Tibia Fractures (UK FixDT) multicentre research collaboratives.
He was also appointed a Medical Member of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal in 2016 and continues to sit in this capacity.

Neil continued his full-time legal studies alongside his medical practice, studying at the University of Law, Birmingham.
Neil said: “Through my research and clinical work, I have a strong skill set for analysing medical records and evaluating scientific papers. My court work covers a wide range of matters, including trials and interlocutory hearings, which I balance with a busy paperwork practice. I regularly draft pleadings and advices in relation to fast-track and multi-track matters.
“In the field of clinical negligence, I am happy to accept instructions across a wide range of medical specialisms and am equally comfortable taking instructions from both claimants and defendants.
“In the field of personal injury, I maintain a broad practice across all core areas and given my specialist background, I have a particular interest in cases involving major traumatic injuries. I also bring my medical experience to bear in cases involving catastrophic injuries.
“I am looking forward to working with the team at No5 Barristers; Chambers which has such a strong reputation in this field.”
