No5 Barristers Defend in Roofing Scam Case

Thu, 20 Aug 2015

Robert Bennett, 61 and Ronald Reeves, 38, Father and Son from Acocks Green, have both been jailed for a roofing scam, which stole thousands of pounds from vulnerable victims.

Bennett was sentenced to eight and a half years and Reeves to five years, for six charges of theft, fraud and transferring criminal property.

The trial at Birmingham Crown Court heard that the pair, trading as R and P Roofing, took money by making false representations concerning roofing and building work, and also stole from victim’s bank accounts. There were a total of five victims.

Talbir Singh, member of No5 Chambers Crime Group, representing Reeves said the offences  “had not been tainted with any high degree of sophistication” and there had been “no attempt by the fraudsters to disguise their identities”.

James Doyle, also a member of the No5 Chambers Crime Group, representing Bennett said “He had a long-term partner who he married. She died in 2008. He found her death very hard to bear and he descended into severe class A drug addiction, hence the need for money.”
