Suella has experience in advising and representing both applicant and local authority in applications and appeals under the Licensing Act 2003. She has worked with a large variety of authorities all over the country- inner city, suburban and rural, large and small- at both contentious committee hearings and appeals. She also acts for a wide variety of private operator.
In particular, she has:
- advised and represented applicants (public houses, hotels, supermarkets and nightclubs) successfully extending their hours and other terms within the operating schedule.
- defended local authorities on appeal at the Magistrates Court on complex issues relating to regulated entertainment such as the performance of plays, live music and lap dancing.
- successfully represented local residents, resisting plans to extend late-night opening in residential areas
She has experience in betting and gaming licences under the old legislation and is a contributor to Philip Kolvin QC’s book Gambling for Local Authorities, Licensing, Planning and Regeneration (Institute of Licensing, 2007) which deals with the new legislation under the Gambling Act 2005.
Suella is also happy to accept instructions on hackney carriage/ taxi licensing.
