Martin Liddiard has specialised knowledge in many areas of Criminal Regulatory Work and is regularly involved in our lecturing programs.
He has been instructed many times to defend companies and individuals in Health and Safety Act prosecutions most of which have involved a death in the workplace.
He often represents the client at inquests around the country prior to the instigation of proceedings and has accumulated a wealth of experience invaluable to the client.
He has undertaken Environment Agency work acting both on behalf of the Agency and on behalf of companies, the extent and breadth of his experience ranging from the comparatively straightforward domestic prosecution to EC Directive and Intercontinental Legislation with global application.
He has particular interest in FSA prosecutions.
As part of his wide regulatory practice Mr. Liddiard also works regularly either side of Trading Standards Prosecutions often working on behalf of Local Authorities instigating proceedings from the outset. He therefore has detailed knowledge of operations across this field. Throughout his time in Chambers he has maintained his interest in licensing legislation and has accepted instructions on behalf of local authorities, enforcement agencies, nightclubs, and resident groups.
Given the broad scope of his expertise Mr. Liddiard also has considerable experience in Food Safety prosecutions, Consumer Credit based prosecutions, and many other fields. More recently he has been involved in complex Special Educational Needs cases, both advisory and at tribunal appeal levels with marked success.
He is accredited for instruction by way of Public Access.
Martin Liddiard has the ability to swiftly identify the issues in any matter saving time and significant costs throughout the period of instruction. Martin has one of the strongest advocacy backgrounds in Chambers spanning many years.
More recently he has contributed to the Chambers lecturing circuit covering, for example, recent developments on taxi licensing procedures and appellate routes.

Notable Cases
Environment Agency v Fats and Protein UK Ltd
Mr Liddiard represented the Defendant, a rendering company, at a successful 6 week trial at Carlisle Crown Court. Following a national outbreak of foot and mouth disease the company faced prosecution for breaching authorisations under EPA 1990 legislation. The Defendant was acquitted and awarded full costs.

HSE -v- O’Connor et al
Mr Liddiard represented the foreman in the HSE prosecution of a demolition company following the death of a site labourer.
Gloucester City Council -v- Charlie Browns Ltd
Mr Liddiard represented Charlie Browns Ltd who faced charges of selling counterfeit designer clothes in a prosecution brought by Gloucester City Council.
