Viewing: Crime for Jonas Hankin KC

Jonas Hankin QC is recommended as a leading Silk in the field of Crime in both Chambers and Partners and the Legal 500.
Described in Chambers and Partners as an “extremely talented” advocate with “a commanding presence in court” and “a profound understanding of complex cases”, and in the Legal 500 as, “a wonderful advocate with a fantastic grasp of pathology” and “a heavyweight homicide practitioner”, Jonas is “very much in demand” for his advocacy and opinion in a broad spectrum of criminal work, and in particular cases of homicide.
Recent notable cases include the double murder of Tracey and Pierce Wilkinson, the murder of midwife Samantha Eastwood and the appeal R v M(B)[2018] 2 Cr. App. R. 1. concerning the legality of extreme body modifications such as ‘tongue-splitting’.
Jonas has established himself as one of the country’s leading prosecutors in the field of child homicide having prosecuted a succession of high-profile cases, including the murders of Saros and Leanor Endris, Dylan Tiffin-Brown and Daniel Pelka and the manslaughter of Rebecca Kandare.
Jonas has a particular interest in the diagnosis of Abusive Head Trauma in babies and infants and possesses impressive depth of knowledge of the academic literature in this area. He has been invited to address, variously, the British Association in Forensic Medicine (the professional association for forensic pathologists in the United Kingdom and Ireland), the British Society of Paediatric Radiologists and the National Police Chiefs’ Council on medico- legal issues arising in child homicide cases.
As well as appearing in court, Jonas advises on law and strategy, both pre-charge and at an early stage in proceedings. Advisory work tends to concern cases where clinical and/or pathological evidence is particularly complex, for example cases involving allegations of Abusive Head Trauma where it is necessary for the prosecution to exclude medical and/or accidental traumatic causes as possible explanations for injury.
"Jonas is an outstanding barrister. He is one of the field leaders in cases of homicide or serious injury involving complex medical and causation issues.
