Edward has a dual qualification as a barrister and Spanish lawyer. After several years with a common law practice at the Bar he was admitted as a Spanish abogado and a member of the Malaga College of Lawyers in 2002.
Edward’s areas of work are civil and commercial with particular emphasis on private international law involving the Spanish jurisdiction. Edward can advise on wills and the administration of estates.
Edward is often instructed by English solicitors’ probate and trusts departments as well as clients direct to deal with estates that have a Spanish element. His expertise includes:
Wills and Inheritance Planning: Drafting Spanish wills, advising how to avoid problems where there are both Spanish and UK wills.
Administration of Estates: Edward can advise on the administration of the Spanish estate and the paperwork required by the notary and land registries. He can draft the powers of attorney and guide beneficiaries through the steps required in order to accept their inheritance. He has wide experience of cases where an English will is executed in Spain and intestacy situations.
Contentious Probate: Litigation when an inheritance is disputed. He has a well developed working knowledge of private international law in this area.
Inheritance Tax: Calculating Spanish inheritance tax liability and filing returns.
Identify Spanish assets: Property Registry and Company Registry searches, Insurance Registry certificate, bank certificates.
Edward has been instructed as an expert witness on Spanish law in the High Court and he is a member of the European Circuit.
