Four counsel from No5 Barristers’ Chambers were involved in a murder trial following the shooting of Dwaine Junior Haughton in Wolverhampton.
Michael Duck QC leading David Isles secured a murder acquittal for Montel Gray who was convicted of manslaughter for the fatal shooting of Haughton.
Four men were convicted of the killing after a six-week trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court in which Michael Burrows QC and Antonie Muller acted for the prosecution.
Montell Gray, 22, of Springhill Road, Wolverhampton, Seamus Williams, 23, of Okemont Drive, Wolverhampton, were found guilty of manslaughter, while two men aged 25 and 26 - who can't be named for legal reasons - were convicted of murder.
Dwaine Haughton was sitting in a car in Valley Road, Park Village, when he was hit in the head and back by bullets fired into the car on July 20, 2018. A post-mortem confirmed he died from a gunshot wound. His cousin escaped uninjured.
A car seen speeding away from the scene was identified as an Audi A7, which was later found after being set on fire outside Wades Scrapyard, in Webb Street, Coseley.
As a result, the 26-year-old man, who cannot be named, was arrested on July 27, last year. His arrest promoted a large police investigation, which used CCTV footage from more than 100 premises, forensics and phone analysis to identify the suspects.
All four men were charged with murder last January, as well as possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of ammunition with intent to endanger life and handling stolen goods. Seamus Williams and the two men who cannot be named were also charged with arson in relation to the burned-out car. All four denied the charges.
The jury returned guilty verdicts on all the other charges faced and the men are due to be sentenced on November 1.
