A woman has won an £8m compensation payout after being left brain damaged following an NHS operation.
The woman was admitted to Salford Royal Hospital for an ectopic pregnancy in 2010. During an operation doctors ruptured her aorta, her heart stopped due to lack of blood, and she suffered catastrophic brain damage.
London’s High Court heard that the woman, who was 22 years old at the time, was engaged, had a job which she loved and enjoyed a full social life.
The hospital’s negligence left her using a wheelchair and requiring 24-hour care.
With the help of her mother, the woman sued Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, who admitted liability in July 2012. After negotiations, the legal team (Paul Bleasdale QC and Simon Michael instructed by Thompson Snell and Passmore LLP) agreed a deal with the trust worth £8m.
Approving the settlement, Mrs Justice Swift said: "I hope that this substantial settlement will at least ensure she has the best possible quality of life in the years to come and I wish her and the other members of her family the very best for the future".
