No5 Barristers Help Celebrate 10 years of the Equality Act 2010

Tue, 13 Oct 2020

On 1 October 2020, No5 Barristers David Gardner and Dr Chelvan took part in a panel webinar organised by Public Law Wales and the Equality and Human Rights Commission in Wales. The event was a celebration of the Equality Act 2010 and the value and impact it has brought to Wales.

David, as a committee member of Public Law Wales, co-chaired the event with Angharad Price of the EHRC, and Dr Chelvan spoke on the protected characteristics of gender reassignment, sex & sexual orientation. The prestigious panel also included Counsel General for Wales, Jeremy Miles MS, who spoke on the importance of the Equality Act 2010 in Wales, and speakers from 30 Park Place Chambers, Bristol Law Centre, Race Equality First, and the Equality and Human Rights Commission, who with Dr Chelvan considered the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010, subsequent case law, and personal experiences.

The chairs and speakers formed a consensus that the Equality Act 2010 is necessary and important legislation which does a great deal to advance equality across Wales, and indeed across England. Nonetheless, the event included sobering accounts of the work which still needs to be done to ensure we live in an equal society.
