No5 Barristers’ Chambers is sponsoring a solicitors’ training day organised by Spinal Injuries Association, a national charity that supports anyone affected by spinal cord injury.
The Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) is hosting one of its annual Solicitors’ Training Days in March which are aimed at solicitors and barristers who work within the field of personal and catastrophic injury.
The SIA, which helps, supports, advises and campaigns on all aspects of spinal cord injury, currently runs two training days a year, with the Manchester event, being held on March 28 at the Crowne Plaza, sponsored by No5 Barristers’ Chambers.
Members of the Chambers’ personal injury team have also been invited to speak during the event, with Chris Bright QC chairing the training day.
Chris is head of No5’s clinical negligence group and a member of the personal injury group. He is a member of the Personal Injuries Bar Association (PIBA) and regularly lectures to solicitors and medico-legal organisations on subjects such as litigating catastrophic head/spinal injury, amputation and cerebral palsy claims and the use of experts.
He said: "We have all seen first-hand the devastating effect a spinal cord injury can have and are honoured that No5 Barristers’ Chambers can be part of the SIA’s Solicitors’ Training Day. The charity provides spinal cord injury information for everyone and training for healthcare professionals, solicitors and case managers.”
Malcolm Duthie is a senior junior with more than 28 years’ experience who practises exclusively in the fields of personal injury and clinical negligence in claims involving catastrophic injuries. He is regularly ranked in the Legal Directories, being described as ‘an intelligent, articulate and skilled advocate’. The topic of his talk will be Recent Case Law Update for SCI claims.
Other speakers at the event include Gary Dawson, a peer support coordinator with the SIA, who will talk about living with a spinal cord injury, along with Alison Conway, SIA partnership liaison manager and Nicholas Edwards, vocational case manager, who will talk about SIA case management.
James Nocker, an expert witness and forensic surveyor of William Martin Property Consultants, will give a talk entitled, The Conflict between Theory and Practice (An adapted property is not necessarily an accessible home) while Kirsty Cook, a clinical specialist physiotherapist with Hobbs Rehabilitation, will talk about rehabilitation for independent living.
No5 Barristers’ Chambers is also one of the sponsors of the SIA’s Cornflower Ball 2019, to be held at the Principal Hotel, Manchester, on the same day as the solicitors’ training event.
The annual event will also celebrate one of Manchester’s best-known symbols – the worker bee, which has come to represent solidarity and strength within the city.
Last year the ball was attended by around 580 guests and raised more than 67,000.
