No5 Barristers' Chambers has again maintained its position as a leading set in the 2022 edition of The Legal 500.
The Legal 500 provides an independent guide to UK law firms, and its rankings are highly recognised within the industry.
The Business and Property Group gained recognition across multiple areas of practice. Chancery, Probate and Tax, the directory remarked “clerks that are quick, responsive, helpful and barristers that are very knowledgeable ad reliable”. The set maintains a solid position across all areas with expertise in contentious probate, estate administration and trusts. The group are recognised for commercial litigation also, stating the team: “offers considerable choice at all levels of experience”. Chambers has a broad commercial practice, and members are regularly instructed in high-value, complex disputes. The real estate team were recognised “from junior to senior and has diversity in terms of style and skill set”. The directory adds: “The group has wide a wide-ranging expertise, with members involved in all types of disputes including conveyancing, land acquisition, restrictive covenants, proprietary estoppel and various tort claims”. Furthermore, the professional negligence team were credited for offering: “high-level, specialised expertise from a team of well-respected and competent barristers across a range of negligence, indemnity, and insurance matters”.
No5's Clinical Negligence Group is described: “as one of the most comprehensive collections of clinical negligence barristers in the Midlands. Work done here is often complex and sensitive, with practitioners specialising in brain and spinal injuries, delayed diagnosis, mental health, birth injury, and matters arising from hospital deaths”.
The Personal Injury Group is also considered a leading set: “offers one of the largest personal injury teams in the circuit. The group has individuals suitable for a range of claims. The team is regularly instructed in spinal, brain, physiological and fatal injury cases, and ones concerning amputation and chronic pain conditions”.
Members of No5's Court of Protection Group are described as: “good and reliable set with expertise in Court of Protection matters” and added: “Court of Protection practice is the choice for many local authorities”.
No5's Crime Group houses a balanced and robust practice both in terms of size and call. Described as “approachable and friendly with the ability to tailor service to one's needs. The set has expertise in serious violence, corporate manslaughter, organised crime cases and complex fraud.”
The directory commented that the Employment Group is: “preferred by many, with several critical instructions of essential instructions coming from the West Midlands key employers, including NHS bodies”.
The Family Group was referred to as a: “high-quality set of public law family practitioners who are highly skilled and effective. Covering both public and private children law and financial remedy, the set offers practitioners able to take on some of the more complex cases and disputes.”
The Planning and Environment Group gained acclaim: “considered the 'go-to' set by many” and “the group is a well-established set for planning and environmental matters, with good strength and talent in both across all levels of call”.
The Immigration Group is described as housing: “a large number of brilliant barristers’ who deliver ‘excellent service' to clients. The group represents individuals irrespective of their financial standing and fields experts in human rights and asylum law. Its barristers appear before the Upper Tribunal, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court”.
The Regulatory Group at No5 is recommended as “a very progressive set, paying particular attention to promoting equality and diversity” and is “home to several strong practitioners, with a broad range of expertise across regulatory law including health and safety, environmental enforcement, and insurance-related work”. Within Professional Disciplinary Law members were highlighted as “an impressive selection of counsel who specialise in disciplinary work and is home to a number of well-known practitioners regularly instructed by the Police Federation and police forces”.

We move to new London premises in the near future having taken on more office space where others are reducing. The space includes a 70 plus training and seminar suite and several virtual court rooms and conference rooms in acknowledgement of the shift to how people want to work. We have recently been short listed for a chambers wide diversity and inclusion award and in Michelle Heeley QC have the youngest ever female circuit leader appointment. In short, I could not be prouder of what we are achieving and will continue to go on achieving going forward.
