No5 Barrister Joins Call for the UK to do More for Refugees

Mon, 07 Sep 2015

No5 Barrister S. Chelvan joined over 300 experts calling on the UK to do more for refugees.  Published in yesterday’s Observer, leading experts on community cohesion, asylum, refugees, migration and law signed the letter, stating  “We believe the government’s current position on the European refugee and migration crisis is misguided and requires urgent change.”

The open letter to the Prime Minister and Home Secretary calls for a “co-ordinated European response. For every refugee we accept, Germany accepts 35.  The chorus calling for greater action is growing rapidly and crosses all traditional party lines. The current government position is bad policy. We urge the government to increase our commitment to give sanctuary to those in urgent need on Europe’s borders. We can do more. We should do more.”

Chelvan was invited to add his name to the letter as part of the Migration and Law Steering Committee.
