Caroline Sumeray: Dad taunted ex-girlfriend on phone as he drove his van over 350ft cliff

Fri, 12 Apr 2013

A spurned boyfriend taunted his ex-girlfriend on the phone as he drove his van over a 350ft cliff, an inquest was told yesterday.

Father-of-two left the line open so Shannon Woodford, 21, could hear him scream.

The inquest at Isle of Wight Coroner’s Court was told Robert Hayball, 20, of Nelson Road, Newport, died of multiple injuries in the early hours of October 11, 2012.

Recording an open verdict, Coroner Caroline Sumeray said: ‘This was a young man saddled with children a lot earlier than he had intended in life.

‘I have heard how he had ambitions and was a good chap, a good friend.

‘I think his mind was clouded by fury and alcohol, distress and anger at all the stresses in his life.’
