Ruth Costello is a specialist clinical negligence barrister with a practice spanning both claimant and defendant work. She is regularly instructed in cases involving life-changing injuries, with a particular focus on gynaecology, obstetrics, birth injuries, spinal surgery and fatal claims.
Ruth is known for her pragmatic approach to complex litigation, especially in cases where expert evidence does not initially point to a clear resolution. She is adept at identifying a path forward, drawing on experience, clear analysis, and a calm, collaborative working style.
Clients and solicitors value her personable manner, particularly in conference, where she creates space for clients to feel understood and direction for experts to engage productively. Ruth has recently been instructed on cases involving a delayed diagnosis of congenital muscular dystrophy, cauda equina injury following spinal surgery and hysterectomy following failed treatment of fibroids.
Ruth has a very busy inquest practice and regularly acts for families at multi-day healthcare inquests. She prides herself on helping ensure families feel the inquest process has brought them clarity and allowed their concerns to be properly investigated. Her input has led to findings of neglect and the issuing of prevention of future deaths reports. Her strong experience in fatal accidents claims allows her to continue to work with clients following inquest proceedings.
Ruth has a strong background in serious injury, having worked on catastrophic injury cases as legal assistant to Gerard McDermott QC. Ruth has also managed a medico-legal and case management agency, a role that relied on forensic analysis of expert reports.
