Mirren Gidda is a barrister within No5’s Public Law group, having successfully completed her pupillage in October 2024.
Mirren represents claimants in the fields of police law, prison law, community care and asylum-related judicial reviews, as well as representing families in inquests. She is currently co-convenor of the Police Action Lawyers’ Group and chair of an independent stop and search police monitoring group.
Prior to coming to the Bar, Mirren spent nine years working as an award-nominated journalist with the BBC, as a documentary presenter for Channel 4 and, most recently, as an investigative journalist with the human rights organisation, Liberty, where she spent four years setting up and working for Liberty’s first journalism unit, including reporting on disproportionate policing. Her journalistic experience means she brings tenacity and determination to her practice, as well as empathy for her clients.
Mirren has experience in a wide range of claimant-focused public law matters. During her second six months of pupillage and as a tenant she has been instructed on and been successful in:
Mirren is chair of an independent police monitoring group and co-convenor of the Police Action Lawyers’ Group. She is currently instructed in several civil claims brought by prisoners against the Ministry of Justice relating to use of force, disability discrimination and breach of Article 5(4) of the Human Rights Act 1998. Mirren is also instructed on judicial review challenges in prison matters, including to an open conditions refusal and a refusal to hold an oral hearing in a Category A review. As a junior for Philip Rule KC, Mirren worked on a successful judicial review challenge to the Secretary of State for Justice’s refusal to release a dying prisoner on compassionate grounds.
Mirren also accepts instructions to represent clients in Parole Board hearings and is currently instructed on a public parole matter. As part of her inquest practice, Mirren is representing the family of a young man who died in prison.
Having previously worked for the children’s rights organisation Coram Voice and the human rights organisation Liberty, Mirren has a particular interest in the intersection between immigration matters and public law as well as broader community care matters.

Mirren is currently taking instructions in SEN tribunal matters. Having previously worked for the children’s rights organisation Coram Voice, she is particularly interested in helping represent families at the tribunal.
Mirren is a member of the Inquest Lawyers’ Group and has a keen interest in representing families at inquests. She is currently representing families in several inquests, including the death of a prisoner and the death of a person detained in a psychiatric unit. Mirren is also instructed as a junior on an inquest into the death of another prisoner.
Mirren is interested in developing an inquiries practice and is currently instructed as a junior on an ongoing inquiry.
