Prior to focusing on criminal law, Lachlan had a varied common law practice, with a particular focus on business and property and housing. He has appeared in most courts across England and Wales, including the Business and Property Courts and the Administrative Court. As such, he is a flexible advocate who is adept at tailoring his submissions to meet the case and tribunal. This background sharpened his legal research and written advocacy abilities.
Lachlan is also experienced in regulatory matters having prosecuted and defended a number of cases brought on behalf of local authorities and trading standards. Lachlan is comfortable working with public bodies, having been seconded to a local authority’s housing department for a number of months in 2021.
In 2023 Lachlan was a ‘junior junior’ counsel to Undercover Policing Inquiry. The purpose of the inquiry is to get to the truth about undercover policing and provide recommendations for the future. Through this experience, Lachlan has an excellent knowledge of the Inquiries Act 2005 and of how to handle sensitive information.”

Lachlan’s client was initially sentenced to 18 months immediate detention for a robbery committed with a knuckle duster. On appeal, Lachlan placed reliance on the overarching Guidelines on Sentencing Offenders with Mental Disorders. He successfully persuaded the CoA to substitute the original sentence for an 18 month suspended sentence leading to his client’s release from custody.
Lachlan prosecuted this multi-handed case involving the importation of multiple kilos of drugs from Spain.
