Expertise

Court of Protection

Keri has a substantial Court of Protection practice, primarily in health and welfare matters but with a keen interest in financial abuse cases.

Keri is instructed by the Official Solicitor, local authorities and on behalf of family members and RPRs.

Much of Keri’s work relates to disputes between local authorities and/or family members in issues which go to the human rights of the individuals concerned such as marriage, sexual relations and contact with other persons.

She has a particular interest in cases where there is an overlap with other jurisdictions such as forced marriage, children and the inherent jurisdiction.

Public Law

Keri’s public law practice is predominantly focused on matters where the rights of individuals come up against the state, whether as children or adults.

She has advised and acted in judicial review proceedings in matters varying from challenges made to adoption and fostering decisions to the provision of care packages.

Her background in local government has given her experience of the challenges facing public bodies and brings that experience to her cases whether acting for or against public bodies.

In line with this Keri has also advised and acted in inquests where the role of the state is in question.

Education

Keri has advised on education law for most of her career, initially in-house at a local authority. That work encompassed advising schools directly on matters which fall to be dealt with at that level, to advising on large county-wide projects such as school reorganisation, major safeguarding investigations, secondment of statutory officers and arrangements for the discharge of another local authority’s functions.

Keri has primarily acted for local authorities since her return to practice, but is keen to expand her range of clients.

Advice to schools has ranged from admissions, exclusions and discrimination to governance and reorganisation matters.

Challenges in respect of special educational needs provision are a particular area of interest, including those cases falling within the National Trial.

She has also given advice to independent schools and to the parents of pupils there in relation to matters affecting the relationship between those schools and their pupils.

There is a significant overlap in Keri’s work in the education sphere with her public law and court of protection practices.
