Jake Acock joined No5 Chambers as a tenant in 2024 and has developed a practice specialising in chancery and property work. Jake is regularly instructed on matters well above his call and his particular expertise lies in inheritance disputes, wills, probate disputes and property matters including claims under the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996. Jake is also developing a practice in real estate litigation.
Jake has developed a busy practice in both the High Court and County Court in a variety of trials and hearings. Jake is often instructed to act in multi-day trials and in high-value matters. He also undertakes appellate work, including drafting grounds of appeal and representing clients at both permission to appeal and appeal hearings. Jake has a busy practice drafting pleadings and providing written advice, often in complex cases. He also has experience preparing for and advising in mediations as Counsel. Jake also accepts instructions in urgent injunctions, often being briefed at short notice.
Jake studied History at university before completing the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Bar Course at the Inns of Court College of Advocacy. Jake received scholarships for both the GDL and Bar Course from Gray’s Inn. Jake also earned one of the highest grades for civil advocacy in his year at the Inns of Court College of Advocacy.
Before coming to the Bar, Jake taught law at both University College London and the London School of Economics. At LSE, Jake was recognised for his outstanding teaching by the Dean of the Law School, with all of Jake’s students rating his teaching as excellent. Jake regularly gives lectures and training for clients and solicitor firms.
Jake is Direct Access trained and accepts work through the Direct Access scheme.
In his spare time Jake enjoys baking and travelling, and frequently finds himself doing escape rooms.
Jake has strong expertise in both contentious and non-contentious trusts work. Jake is frequently instructed to provide advice for both claimants and defendants in 1975 Act claims at all stages of the litigation, including representation at final hearings. Jake regularly appears in the High Court and Count Court in probate and trust matters including claims under TOLATA 1996, proprietary estoppel and contentious probate matters (including claims to substitute or remove personal representatives and trustees). Jake frequently advises and represents parties at mediations.

Jake has developed a strong practice in real estate litigation and is frequently instructed on property matters in both the High Court and County Court.
Jake practises in all areas of property law and is often instructed to represent both claimants and defendants in multi-day trials involving complex areas of trusts and property law. Jake has experience representing parties in easement, boundary disputes and claims to remove restrictive covenants. Jake is regularly instructed to appear in the First Tier Tribunal and the Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber). Jake has experience in commercial landlord and tenant matters (including claims under the Landlord & Tenant Act 1954), dilapidation matters, breach of covenant, contractual interpretation of leases, boundary disputes, and equitable remedies such as specific performance, rectification or rescission. Jake also deals with residential landlord & tenant matters with a strong focus on trespasser disputes.

Jake is developing a specialist business & property practice with experience in both the High Court and County Court. Jake is often instructed on complex matters combining contract, property and trust law, whether as sole counsel or as part of a led team. Outside of court, Jake provides advice conferences, drafts statements of case and provides written advice. Jake is regularly instructed on matters beyond his level of call.

Jake has a broad practice in commercial litigation and is frequently instructed on matters involving breach of contract, formation of a contract, mistake, and equitable remedies such as specific performance, recession, rectification and equitable damages. Jake also represents clients in cases involving misrepresentation, frustration and contractual interpretation.
Jake draws on his experience from lecturing in contract law at LSE, which clients find is valuable to all cases he is instructed on. Jake has been described as bringing a very practical approach to commercial matters and is therefore instructed on giving advice in complex commercial cases, both in writing and in conference.

Jake is well-equipped to help with any commercial or contractual matter. He has a particular focus on breach of contract, contractual interpretation of clauses, and misrepresentation. Jake is often instructed on complex cases where there is a combining trust, contract and property matters.
Jake is beginning to build a practice incorporating construction disputes, in particular construction disputes involving contractual issues and misrepresentation. Jake’s latest work in this area includes providing advice on breach of contract for a housing renovation and drafting a Defence for breach of contract.
