Gurprit Mattu has a diverse commercial law practice, focusing on civil and business fraud, commercial disputes, financial services disputes, insolvency, company law, and asset recovery. She is also a practising British Virgin Islands lawyer and takes instructions on international matters.

Gurprit is regularly instructed in a broad range of commercial disputes, a number of which involve fraud allegations.
Gurprit is currently instructed in one of the largest fraud cases the world has seen, the 1 Malaysia Development Bank Fraud (1MDB), she has assisted in bringing claims for the recovery of assets.
She advises insurance companies on the chances of success at trial in large fraud cases, and has also gained significant experience in business crime cases. Gurprit started her career at the criminal bar and her specialism was corporate crime.
Gurprit advises and represents clients in commercial disputes in the Commercial Court, Chancery Division or at mediation.
She receives instructions across a wide range of commercial disputes, and more specifically fraud, commercial debt recovery, quincecare claims, insolvency, consumer credit claims.
Gurprit has gained significant experience within financial services through being seconded to the Financial Conduct Authority, where she has worked on a number of large cases relating to collective investment schemes, Libor manipulation, unfair contract terms in consumer contracts and corporate fraud.
Notably she was part of the FCA team that prepared and successfully presented the first Unauthorised Business Department matter under s235 FSMA (collective investment schemes) that went to a fully contested trial; [2013] EWHC 178. The decision was appealed, and eventually the Supreme Court found that the company’s land banking arrangements amounted to operating collective investment schemes without authorisation.

She also provided advice to HSBC Bank Plc, Global Markets for a number of years in their Early Neutral Evaluation process of derivative miss selling claims, in particular in the assessment of consequential loss claims.
Gurprit enjoys working on company and partnership disputes, she has been involved in shareholder disputes, unfair prejudice petitions, litigation arising out of corporate transaction, matters involving corporate governance, directors duties and disqualification.
She also takes instructions on the insolvency of companies and partnerships, advising on statutory demands, winding up petitions, company restorations and bankruptcy generally.
Gurprit has undertaken work in this area in the BVI too.
Gurprit was called to the BVI Bar in 2019, and regularly deals with BVI cases.
She worked in-house at a international law firm based in the BVI, working on large scale BVI company / commercial and trusts litigation for clients from multiple jurisdictions, including Russia, Switzerland, Hong Kong. Cases included Alfa Bank v Emmerson, Wilton v AFS Trustee, a complex multi-jurisdictional trusts dispute.
Gurprit acted as junior counsel in:
Bowview Overseas Limited and Others, Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (2020), a multimillion dollar debt dispute.
Asiyah Grant v Javier Maduro Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, in the Court of Appeal (2019) a discreet point of law on limitation arose in this case.
IsZo Capital v Nam Tai Property Inc BVIHC (Com) 2020/0165, an international multimillion shareholder dispute,
Gurprit has been involved for the last couple of years in the scandalous 1MDB fraud, involving the prime minister of Malaysia, over 7 billion dollars were stolen from the people of Malaysia.
Gurprit also has experience of being involved in teams working on Jersey Trust disputes, Isle of Man and Hong Kong commercial and corporate fraud cases.

As an accredited mediator, trained with the Society of Mediators, she brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table. She has participated in mediations successfully, facilitating resolutions in a variety of complex disputes.
