Louisa Sherlock is a member of the Clinical Negligence, Personal Injury, Inquests, Public Inquiries & Coronial Law and Regulatory groups.

Louisa was called to the Bar and commenced pupillage in 2018; she commenced tenancy in 2019. She has been ranked by Legal 500 as a Rising Star (Tier 1) 2024 in Clinical Negligence.

Louisa is a former dental surgeon having practised for over ten years, both within NHS and private practice. She completed a diploma to become a Member of the Joint Dental Faculties of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, London.

Louisa brings this experience to her work at the Bar. She is her able to read and understand medical records and expert reports rapidly, and is able to liaise well with expert witnesses and lay clients.

Expertise

Clinical Negligence

Louisa is dual qualified in dentistry and law. She was called to the Bar and commenced pupillage in 2018, and commenced tenancy in 2019.

Louisa practised as a dental surgeon for over a decade, both within the NHS and privately.

Given her professional background, Louisa accepts instructions from both Claimants and Defendants in all aspects of Clinical Negligence work, bringing her experience to bear. She can readily understand the terminology used in medical and dental records. Louisa has recently written the book, “A Practical Guide to Dental Negligence Litigation”, published in April 2023. She has recently drafted a precedent for Lexis-Nexis and regularly provides lectures to expert witnesses, dental surgeons and dental nurses on relevant legal matters as part of their Continuing Professional Development.

Louisa has extensive experience in matters involving expert witnesses, including holding conferences with experts, and cross-examines expert witnesses as part of their assessment with the Expert Witness Institute. She has successfully argued Daniels v Walker at trial. In addition, she drafts pleadings, advises on settlement and attends CCMCs.

Her experience includes the following:

  • failure to diagnose a fracture which resulted in an amputation; -failure to diagnose sepsis which resulted in death;
  • failure to diagnose cancer which resulted in premature death; -failure to properly manage labour, resulting in stillbirth; -negligently performed gastric surgery;
  • dental negligence (for both Claimant and Defendant).

Louisa was junior to Henry Pitchers KC in a complex brain injury case involving multiple experts.

Throughout her legal training, Louisa received numerous awards, including the Lord Denning scholarship from Lincoln’s Inn.

Louisa is also qualified as an international civil-commercial mediator and can conduct mediations, both in person and online, as well as represent clients in mediations.

As a dental surgeon, Louisa was praised for her attention to detail and sensitivity when working with anxious patients. She is therefore well placed to work with clients who are understandably feeling anxious when facing the prospect of litigation. As well as treating patients, she assisted with the running of a busy NHS practice and helped staff to prepare for CQC inspections.

Louisa carried out further training with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, London, and following additional training with an internationally renowned dental surgeon, developed a private practice involving cosmetic dentistry, invisible orthodontics and facial aesthetics.

Cancer

Louisa has acted in cases where a failure to diagnose cancer has led to premature death and pain, suffering and loss of amenity. She has conducted conferences with experts, drafted pleadings and advised on settlement.

Gynaecology & Obstetrics

Louisa has experience in vaginal mesh cases: hosting conferences with experts, drafting pleadings and advising on settlement.

Medical / Surgical

Louisa has broad experience in medical and surgical cases, including failure to diagnose a fracture which resulted in amputation, negligently performed gastric surgery and dental negligence (for both Claimant and Defendant).

Her professional background means she is able to rapidly read through and understand medical records and expert reports, as well as liaise with expert witnesses and lay clients.

Personal Injury

Louisa works on multi-track personal injury matters. She is currently working on a fatal accident case which occurred as result of the fracture of a blade in a remote-controlled mower involving technical engineering evidence. Louisa attends conferences, drafts pleadings, attends CCMCs and advises on settlement in addition to appearing at trial.

Mediation

Louisa is dual qualified in dentistry and law.

Louisa is also qualified as an international civil-commercial mediator having completed a training course with ADR-ODR International, and can conduct mediations both in person and online as well as represent clients in mediations.

In her work as a dental surgeon, Louisa was praised for her attention to detail and sensitivity when working with anxious patients. She is therefore well placed to manage the heightened levels of stress which naturally arise throughout the course of litigation and in a mediation.

Inquests, Public Inquiries & Coronial Law

Louisa is dual qualified in dentistry and law. She also completed a diploma to become a Member of the Join Dental Faculties of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, London.

She has represented Interested Persons in inquests which investigate deaths in hospital, including stillbirth, failure to diagnose sepsis in a child resulting in death and failure to properly treat medical emergencies resulting in death.

Louisa practiced as a dental surgeon for over a decade, both within the NHS and privately. As well as treating patients, she assisted with the running of a busy NHS practice and helped staff to prepare for CQC inspections.
