Background

Ashanti-Jade Walton

Call: 2016

Ashanti-Jade is an experienced criminal advocate who both prosecutes and defends in serious and complex cases.

Recognised for her meticulous preparation and persuasive courtroom presence, Ashanti-Jade is regularly instructed in challenging cases, including multi-handed trials. Her practice includes particular experience in serious violence, sexual offences, organised crime, and cases involving digital evidence.

A CPS Grade 3 prosecutor and a member of the RASSO and Serious Crime panels, Ashanti-Jade is trusted to handle demanding and sensitive work.

Beyond her criminal practice, she also has experience in Regulatory, Inquests, Professional Disciplinary, and Licensing matters.

Expertise

Crime

Ashanti-Jade is regularly instructed in cases involving Rape and Serious Sexual Offences, including those concerning children, historic allegations, and cases with a cultural element – she is recognised for her sensitive and effective approach to cross-examination.

Her experience extends to multi-handed conspiracies, including kidnappings, serious violence, and County Lines drug supply, where she is trusted to manage the evidential and tactical challenges of such proceedings.

A diligent and hard-working junior, Ashanti-Jade is known for her clear, persuasive advocacy in challenging cases and her articulate written work.

Notable Crime Cases

R v B (others) – Led Junior, Prosecution

Multi-handed kidnapping; advised on evidential gaps, use of ANPR and telephone data, and secured reluctant complainant’s evidence at trial.

R v I – Prosecution

Prosecuted three defendants for conspiracy to possess a firearm, involving complex telephone and disclosure issues.

R v I – Defence

Sexual assault of a child under 13; successfully opposed admission of hearsay evidence under s.120 CJA 2003.

R v O – Respondent, Court of Appeal

Appeared for the Crown in an appeal against conviction for being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs. The appeal challenged the sufficiency of the evidence and the judge’s directions on the “concerned in supply” element. Drafted the respondent’s notice, made oral submissions, and the appeal was dismissed.

R v E – Prosecution, RASSO

Prosecuted an eight-count indictment including multiple rape offences and kidnap arising from a domestic context. Secured conviction, managing sensitive disclosure and careful handling of the complainant’s evidence.

R v E – Defence

s.20 OAPA; glassing allegation; ran self-defence — acquitted.

R v C – Defence

Witness intimidation (s.51 CJPOA 1994); alleged threats to ex-wife during proceedings — acquitted.

R v E – Defence

Burglary; despite bad character of 10+ previous convictions admitted, highlighted failures in police investigation and pursuit of other suspect — acquitted

Regulatory

Ashanti-Jade has experience in professional disciplinary proceedings, including cases involving allegations of sexual assault, inappropriate relationships, and neglect. She has presented cases for the Education Workforce Council, where the issues often raised questions of safeguarding and public confidence.

Her licensing and regulatory work has included premises licence hearings, taxi appeals, businesses operating in breach of Covid regulations, and cases involving counterfeit cigarettes..

Inquests and Coronial Law

Ashanti-Jade has represented bereaved families and other interested persons in sensitive and challenging inquests, including cases raising issues of mental health, safeguarding, and workplace safety.

She represented the family of a young man who had, on the face of it, taken his own life. Ashanti-Jade made submissions as to intention, successfully arguing that the evidence did not meet the threshold for suicide. The Coroner returned a conclusion of accident (unintended death).

She also represented the deputy manager of a large nightclub whose brother, an employee, had died in an accident at work due to unsafe working practices. Ashanti-Jade made successful submissions that gross negligence manslaughter should not be left to the jury as a conclusion, narrowing the scope of the inquest.

Ashanti-Jade is valued for her ability to combine sensitivity with robust advocacy in Coroner’s Courts, ensuring that families and professionals feel supported while the key issues are effectively addressed.
