No5 Barristers' Chambers - Excellence is at the heart of everything we do.
Background

Alex Pritchard-Jones

Call: 2015

Alex Pritchard-Jones is an experienced practitioner in business and property work. Alex’s practice covers commercial dispute resolution, wills, trusts and probate, insolvency, and all property work. Alex specialises in cases that require detailed legal argument and hard fought trials.

Alex can advise and obtain emergency High Court injunctions in appropriate cases and is willing to be instructed in the evening and at weekends in cases where time is of the essence.

Alex gives comprehensive advice at the start of a case and is a specialist at getting to grips with complex facts. He can draft pleadings within tight timeframes. He believes in the importance of face to face conferences at the start of a case as an opportunity for the client to give detailed instructions and he to give frank advice, before litigation begins. Alex’s experience working in the City of London before becoming a barrister means he has a good understanding of the needs of business clients.

Expertise

Agriculture & Rural Affairs

Alex Pritchard-Jones has a wide range of experience in agricultural and rural affairs matters, grounded in both legal expertise and personal background. Having grown up on smallholdings in Wales, where his family kept sheep, Alex brings a practical understanding to the often emotionally and commercially complex disputes faced by rural clients.

Alex’s recent experience includes:

  • Claims concerning the sale of horses and alleged defects
  • Disputes over the sale of dogs and questions of pedigree status
  • Claims involving farm machinery and trespass to outbuildings
  • Disputes over trespass to farm goods
  • Claims involving easements for water, both over and under land
  • Applications under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975
  • Claims for proprietary estoppel and common intention constructive trusts
  • Acting as a mediator in a £3 million estate dispute involving valuable firearms

Through his connection to farming communities, Alex understands the deep personal ties clients have to their land. These disputes can threaten farms that have been in families for generations, or put essential resources—like cattle water access—at risk. He offers commercially sound and pragmatic advice to secure the best outcomes in often high-stakes, emotionally charged situations.

Alex maintains a strong paper practice and frequently advises on a wide range of agricultural claims. He prefers to meet clients in person—often at the farm or rural property—as a first step before litigation begins. This allows for clear instructions and candid advice at the earliest stage.

In addition to representing clients, Alex is also a qualified mediator and acts in that capacity in agricultural disputes.

Prior to being called to the Bar in 2015, Alex obtained a Master’s degree from Oxford University and graduated with a First Class degree in History and Politics from Newcastle University. He was awarded scholarships from Middle Temple and was nominated for Barrister of the Year at the Birmingham Law Society Awards.

During Bar School, Alex worked as a paralegal at a leading London criminal law firm, representing individuals accused of crimes across London police stations. This background in criminal fraud now informs and strengthens his business and property practice.

Outside the courtroom, Alex is the Leader of Birmingham Central Read Easy, an organisation helping adults learn to read.

Banking, Finance & Financial Regulation

Alex Pritchard-Jones has extensive experience in banking and finance litigation, combining strong legal expertise with firsthand industry insight. Prior to being called to the Bar, he worked at Lloyds Bank and JP Morgan on financial remediation projects, equipping him with a practical understanding of commercial and consumer finance operations.

  • Enforceability of loan agreements involving unauthorised lenders
  • Validity of personal guarantees where fraud—such as execution by a third party—has been alleged
  • Recovery of directors’ dividends and treatment of ‘bad leavers’
  • Penalty clauses in bridging finance transactions worth over £1 million

He has substantial experience in claims involving undisclosed commission paid to finance brokers. This includes both ‘secret’ and ‘half-secret’ commission disputes, as well as broader unfair relationship claims under the Consumer Credit Act 1974. He has appeared in numerous vehicle finance commission cases at both trial and interim stages, and also handles disputes concerning PPI policies.

Alex maintains a wide-ranging practice under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000, advising on the regulation and enforceability of financial products and activities. He has represented individuals in disputes concerning loans advanced by unregulated lenders, including challenges to enforceability.

He also has particular expertise in personal guarantees and indemnities.

In addition to his work as counsel, Alex is a qualified mediator and acts in that capacity in financial disputes.
