Sally Howes KC and Sarah Slater were instructed by Natalie Kelly from the Crown Court Unit, CPS West Midlands to prosecute Amir Khan for the Attempted Murder of his wife, Madia Bano on the 1st November 2025. He was convicted by the jury on the 5th May 2026 of Attempted Murder. On the 7th July 2026 he was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court to an custodial sentence of 30 years plus an extended licence of 5 years. On the 1st November 2025 at around 10:35pm, the Defendant made a phone call to request an ambulance for his wife who had collapsed within his flat, two of their four children were also present. Ms Bano had returned to the flat only 35 minutes before. During the call, the Defendant said that his wife had collapsed and he could not wake her. She was found unresponsive on the bed when the paramedics arrived. At hospital though, a scan revealed a penetrating wound from behind her right ear and into her brain. The Prosecution presented expert medical evidence during the trial which confirmed that the victim had collapsed due to a “penetrating wound which extended into her brain to a depth of approximately 9cm.” This caused catastrophic damage to her brain and sadly the victim remains unconscious and unresponsive in hospital. She has been caused irreversible and permanent brain damage. The weapon used was never recovered but was likely to be a long, thin implement such as a screwdriver. The Prosecution’s case was that the only person who could have inflicted this wound was the Defendant. He did not provide any real explanation for what had happened during the trial, save for saying she had collapsed – the jury accepted that he was responsible for causing her injuries and intended to kill his wife.
