Chloë Ashley and Phil Bradley KC were instructed on behalf of SD, who faced a murder charge arising from a fatal house fire in Birmingham. Talbir Singh KC appeared for the co-defendant, TP, also charged with murder.
Following a two-week trial before HHJ Smith KC, Chloë and Phil’s client was unanimously acquitted of murder but convicted of the lesser offence of manslaughter. Talbir’s client was convicted of arson.
The case concerned the death of a 37-year-old man who died in hospital after sustaining injuries in a fire at a property in Highters Heath, Birmingham, in September 2025. The prosecution alleged the fire had been started deliberately.
