Daniel Oscroft successfully prosecuted Ahmad Mulakhil, who has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment with one year on extended licence for the abduction and rape of a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton. The defendant, who is liable for deportation, was also made subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and an indefinite restraining order.

The case attracted widespread national and international media coverage, and in August 2025 prompted large-scale protests in Nuneaton and other cities across England.

Mr Oscroft prosecuted the case at trial and at sentence at Warwick Crown Court before Her Honour Judge Kristina Montgomery KC. Mulakhil, a 23-year-old Afghan asylum seeker who had been in the UK for only four months, targeted his victim after spotting her playing on swings in Marlborough Park on 22 July 2025. He approached the girl, walked her to a nearby residential cul-de-sac, and subjected her to a prolonged sexual assault which he filmed on his phone. Mulakhil pleaded guilty to one count of rape in November 2025 but denied the remaining charges. In February 2026, a jury convicted him of a further count of rape of a child under 13, two counts of sexual assault, child abduction, and taking an indecent photograph of a child.
