Phil Bradley KC and Siobhan Collins, instructed by Douglas Marshall of the Complex Casework Unit, secured murder convictions following an eight-week trial at Loughborough Crown Court.
The victim, 21-year-old Thapelo Jali, was stabbed twenty-five times in a revenge attack following escalating tensions over the supply of drugs in the Normacot area of Stoke-on-Trent.
Mr Jali attacked one of the defendants (Tuheed Hussain) outside their home address. Joined by his brothers, Tuheed then chased Mr Jali down to effect revenge. Tuheed drove his brothers Tayyab and Ezaan Hussain and a fourth man who evaded arrest. Thapelo Jali was cornered in a nearby alleyway. Tayyab, Ezaan and the fourth man then repeatedly stabbed him, and left him for dead. Tuheed then collected his brothers who returned with him to their home address. There they began clearing up blood, before disposing of the car used to ferry them to the killing.
All three men pleaded not guilty to murder at an earlier hearing. Tayyab Hussain changed his plea to ‘guilty’ during cross-examination. His brother Ezaan followed suit. Their brother Tuheed was convicted of manslaughter. Four other men (JT represented by Talbir Singh KC and another by Gary Bell KC) were acquitted.
Tayyab Hussain was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years. Ezaan Hussain was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years. Tuheed Hussain was sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment for the offence of manslaughter.
