A defendant was convicted of committing two violent assaults within weeks of each other. Andrew Thorpe firstly stabbed a man multiple times, resulting in a charge of attempted murder, following his swift arrest he was remanded into custody where he then brutally assaulted another inmate, murdering him
Operation Ice-Skate related to an attempted murder on 29th May 2024 committed by Andrew Thorpe. Whilst on remand at HMP Nottingham and awaiting trial, Mr Thorpe was accused of the murder of Jonathon Thornton following an assault within the shower are of the prison.
Although investigated separately, the Crown made a successful application to have the two matters tried together. The Crown were further successful in seeking the courts permission to rely upon a previous conviction for grievous bodily harm with intent.
The Crown adduced expert evidence from blood splatter experts and pathologists in order to conclusively establish the case against the Defendant.
The Defendant denied attempted murder on the basis he had no intent to kill and denied murder on the basis he had no intention to cause grievous bodily harm. He was convicted, on both counts, by a jury at Nottingham Crown Court following a three-week trial.
