No5 Barristers’ Chambers is pleased to announce that Giles Pengelly has been appointed as a Deputy Traffic Commissioner by the Secretary of State for Transport.

Giles was Called to the Bar in 2017 and joined Chambers in 2020.

The Deputy Traffic Commissioners assist the eight full-time Traffic Commissioners in Great Britain to regulate and monitor the road haulage and coach/bus industries.

Giles will be mainly based in Birmingham.

Traffic Commissioners and their Deputies hear cases at public inquiries to assess whether operators and/or individuals have complied with license conditions and, if not, to make decisions intended to achieve the objectives of road safety and fair competition between them.

The Traffic Commissioners (and their Deputies) ultimately have the power to revoke licenses and disqualify people from being involved in the industry.

Michael Duck KC, Head of the Criminal Group said,

“It is a notable achievement for Giles to be appointed to a judicial role at such an early stage of his career. It is a further indication of the Crime group’s strength in depth. We wish him well in his new role. Giles will, of course, remain an invaluable member of the group and will combine his new role with his busy practice.”

Giles will continue to practise in Chambers, in addition to this new commitment.
