Siobhan Collins and Sarah Slater were instructed by West Midlands SVOC to prosecute Saabir Mohamed and Tygon Cogger in relation to a shooting which occurred on the 23rd October 2023 in Smethwick. They were both convicted following a trial on the 3rd July 2024 at Birmingham Crown Court of Possession of a Firearm with Intent to Endanger Life. They both later also pleaded Guilty to Possession of Class A Drugs with intent to supply.
The shooting was a revenge attack for a stabbing that occurred the night before. The Prosecution’s case was that Mohamed and Cogger had deliberately sought out the rival group and fired at them in a car park in Smethwick. Mohamed was the gunman, Cogger was the driver of the vehicle they used. Mohamed fired twice at the group with a sawn-off shotgun and managed to hit one male who was taken to hospital with injuries to his lower leg. In order to avoid detection – they used a stolen Ford Kuga car. The police though were able to locate the footage of the shooting and then work backwards to confirm that Mohamed and Cogger had also used another vehicle – a Mercedes. The CCTV confirmed that they swapped into the Ford Kuga at around 22:40 and then drove to the location of the shooting.
During the trial, the full CCTV was played to the jury. The Prosecution also adduced evidence to support movement of phones (in tandem with the vehicles used), contact between those involved, scientific evidence, expert evidence in relation to both the firearm used and facial recognition.
After the shooting and in a further attempt to evade detection – both Defendants fled to a hotel and were found with large quantities of Class A drugs on the 6th December 2023. They accepted that they intended to supply both “crack” cocaine and heroin and also pleaded guilty to these offences.
On the 13th February 2025 they were both sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court. Mohamed received a total sentence of 20 years and 8 months and Cogger received a total sentence of 18 ½ years.
