This case involved a Malaysian student who arrived at Coventry University in January this year.
Unknown to everyone she was in an advanced state of pregnancy. She kept it secret from everyone.
She gave birth in her room on 6th March and, despite efforts from friends, refused help and told no one what had happened. She placed her baby into a Cereal box, a plastic bag and then her suitcase.
As a result of blood loss, she ended up accepting that she had to go to hospital.
Despite doctors knowing that she had given birth, she continued to lie about her pregnancy and her baby.
2 days after admission to hospital she told the police what she had done.
At trial she maintained that a voice had told her to kill her baby.
The Defences to murder were Manslaughter by reason of Diminished Responsibility and Infanticide. 2 psychiatrists were called in support of these defences.
The jury rejected both.
