The two defendants were 15 years old and Ali was only 17 years old at the time of his death. The murder took place on 20th January 2024 in Victoria Square in Birmingham. The defendants followed Ali and his friend through Grand Central and onto Victoria Square where Ali and his friend had paused by a bench to chat and play on their phones. There, the defendants, jointly armed with a knife, challenged them, and one stabbed Ali fatally to the chest. The jury retired for just over four hours before returning verdicts of murder for the first defendant and manslaughter for the second defendant as well as convicting both defendants of possessing a bladed article.

The sentence of both defendants will take place in October 2024.
