The Prisons Handbook 2024 provides an invaluable resource for prisoners, prison staff and legal practitioners entering this area of work. It offers an exhaustive guide to the prison system of England and Wales. The Handbook is now in its 25th year, and No5 Barristers’ Chambers is delighted to have been chosen to update and edit the legal section.

Chosen for its expertise in representing the rights of prisoners, No5 Barristers’ Chambers includes in the Handbook’s legal section the relevant statutory provisions, rules, policies and case law that apply to so many issues that affect prisoners in their custodial experience, from access to justice, to legal aid, to prisoner welfare. The legal section also includes an overview of criminal appeals, including the procedural rules that govern them.

No5 Barristers’ Chambers is very pleased to be able to help make the law accessible and available as knowledge of the legal protections can be the first step to helping ensure a humane and decent treatment of prisoners and their families. The Handbook is integral in ensuring that access to justice. We look forward to further developing the legal section in future iterations of the excellent Handbook.
