Operation Thatcher was the successful prosecution of five young males for their involvement in the murder of 15-year-old Keon Lincoln. This offence was committed in the Handsworth area of Birmingham in January 2021.
Michael Burrows QC prosecuted this case together with Siobhan Collins. The case was tried by Lord Justice Davis and concluded on 5th November 2021. Michael Duck QC and Antonie Muller defended Michael Ugochukwu
The victim was attacked in daylight hours by a group of 5 young men. This was a planned and co-ordinated killing. The youngest defendant was aged just 14. He, armed with a gun, shot at the deceased, twice. Three other youths stabbed him with Rambo-style knives. Those four males were convicted of his murder. The fifth defendant, an adult, had supplied the children with those knives and was convicted of manslaughter.
The presentation of the prosecution case required reliance upon complex CCTV material, legal argument concerning the status of expert imagery evidence and the cross-examination of child defendants in line with the current Toolkits.
