Michelle Heeley QC represented the defendant Paul Fitzgerald in a case that made headlines across the United Kingdom.
Fitzgerald was accused of murdering the “UK’s worst paedophile” Richard Huckle whilst both were serving inmates at HMP Full Sutton. Fitzgerald did not deny torturing, raping and killing Huckle, but claimed that he had done so because his mind was substantially impaired by his various mental disorders.
A 4 day trial before Mr Justice Lavender heard harrowing and complex evidence in respect of the alleged murder. Psychiatric evidence was presented by both parties, and it was agreed by all that Fitzgerald was a diagnosed psychopath.
The trial concluded with the Judge commending both parties for the helpful and efficient way they had conducted the case.
