Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence barrister Oliver May has been appointed to the Bar Council to represent self-employed Juniors under seven years in practice. His appointment will commence on 1 January 2021.
The appointment follows a highly competitive exercise run by the Bar Council earlier this month, in which Oliver was elected by fellow members of the profession.
In Oliver’s successful candidate statement he stated that he intends to encourage the Bar Council to focus on diversity of entry into the profession, retention of diversity of talent, and public legal education with a focus on the importance of the rule of law and the barrister’s role in helping preserve it.
Oliver said: “I am delighted to have been elected to the Bar Council. I put forward a very progressive candidate statement and it is heartening for that to have received the support of the profession. I am looking forward to getting started in January. In the mean time I am going to be getting in touch with the Bar’s equality and diversity advocacy groups to learn if, and how, I can help them going forward.”
