Counsel from No5 Barristers’ Chambers has been named Barrister of the Year in leading legal sector awards in the same ceremony that Lady Hale received a lifetime achievement award.
The Modern Law Awards 2020, which are now in their seventh year, named Nabila Mallick as the winner in a category which recognises “a barrister who has made a major contribution in their area of law and/or to the success of their Chambers in the last year”.
At the same time as celebrating her award success, Nabila has also been nominated, by a third party, for the 2020 Women in Law Awards.
The highly regarded Modern Law Awards, which have more than 20 categories, pride themselves on being a showcase and setting benchmarks for best practice in this challenging arena. The winners were announced at a black-tie event in Manchester.
In awarding the Barrister of the Year award, the judges sought “evidence of a profession-leading achievement in the law, innovative client service or Chambers business performance”.
Nabila, a member of the Public Law and Employment Law Groups at No5 said: “It is such an honour to receive this award. I am passionate about my work and representing my clients, some of whom are the most dejected members of society. To have my knowledge and dedication recognised in this way is very humbling. I know that I will continue to work unrelentingly for those I represent.
“I have always felt most at home among members of the Bar and recognise how lucky I am to participate in a profession that serves a broad community.”
Tony McDaid, CEO and Director of Clerking at No5, said: “We are delighted to congratulate Nabila on her success, as her outstanding work and commitment to the legal profession is recognised. She is extremely talented and brings a wealth of experience to Chambers.”
Nabila, who was called to the Bar in 1992, is undertaking a course in Mental Health at King’s College London and is a contributing editor to Tolley’s online Employment Handbook, in addition to a full-time practice.
She has a keen interest in mental health issues, which crosses over into all her areas of practice. Her cases have been regularly reported in the national press. She has been interviewed before a global audience on BBC World News, the BBC One Show and numerous BBC radio stations. She is frequently quoted in online publications and in academic journals on issues of religious discrimination.
Nabila has also been invited to join Bristol University’s Women in Law panel for discussions with HH Justice Foster.
