Following a three-week trial at Birmingham Crown Court Michael Duck QC has seen murderer David Olczyk jailed for life for beating Kristof Zwolinski to death.

Michael Duck QC, leading Martin Liddiard in the prosecution of the case, told the court that the 47-year-old victim was viciously assaulted and was kicked, punched and stamped on following a drunken argument at a flat in Hunters Road, Lozells on July 29 last year.

Two other men, Marcin Goetzke, 39, and Andrze Padewski, 43, both of no fixed abode, were acquitted of the same charge.

“As the evidence began to unravel each of the defendants recognised the trouble they were in and sought to give an account that would exonerate them,” Michael Duck QC said, and added that “the defendants had failed to take into account the scientific evidence against them.”

“There was a forensic examination of the premises, “said Mr Duck, “and blood was found on the side of the mattress and bed frame. There was another major area of blood on the wall.”

“Attempts to clean blood on the floor were “next to hopeless,” he added.

Describing Mr Zwolinski’s injuries as appalling Michael Duck QC said: “Mr Zwolinski was viciously attacked. There is no other sensible description of it. He was obviously overwhelmed by the nature and scale of the violence.”

Olczyck, 28, was sentenced to life with a minimum of 17 years for murder.
