Counsel from No5 Barristers’ Chambers has seen a motorist acquitted in an unusual case, where a jogger was killed after a vehicle skidded on ice.
Barrister Ian Bridge saw the jury unanimously acquit the defendant of an allegation that she caused death by careless driving following a four-day trial at Ipswich Crown Court.
The pedestrian was killed on a country road when she was struck by a vehicle which had skidded on ice. However, the court heard that the road on which the collision occurred has not been gritted due to an error. The defendant had used the route regularly without previous incident.
In the last five years, Ian Bridge has acted for the defence in approximately 100 cases where causing death by dangerous driving or serious injury by dangerous driving is alleged or death by careless driving. He has also defended in a number of high profile health and safety prosecutions following workplace incidents.
His clients have included LGV and other commercial drivers, as well as motorists and prominent people in the public eye.
He was instructed in the Bath Tipper Truck case where his client was acquitted, and the M20 bridge collapse where his client received a suspended sentence after detailed mitigation.
