Phil Bradley QC prosecuted Dean Hartley, 30, for manslaughter of Karl Swift, 33, in Halesowen town centre.

Mr Swift, after being punched in the face by Hartley, hit his head on the ground and died in hospital two days later.

In his account to the police, Hartley claimed he found Mr Swift in a heap on the floor and that he must have fallen over.

Detective Inspector Paul Joyce, from West Midlands Police CID, said “Mr Swift was left with a broken jaw and unconscious before he even hit the floor, which shows the severity of the blow he suffered.”

Hartley was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in jail for manslaughter—to which he denied, and a further nine months in jail for intending to pervert the course of justice.
