Ekwall Singh Tiwana defends father of four Ian Cooper who was a former boss of a successful multi-million pound business. It was heard that Cooper threatened to torture a vulnerable man in a plot to rob part of the victim’s compensation payout.
It was heard that Philip Haynes was held prisoner in his own home by Cooper and his accomplice, Darren Clayton. When the threats failed Clayton went into the victims pockets and found his Barclaycard which was used by Clayton, Copper and their friend Joanna Ward.
It was reported that the three had deliberately targeted Mr Haynes after he collected a huge compensation payout following an industrial accident.
The court was told that Cooper had been the successful MD of a company with 25 employees and an annual turnover of up to £4m-a-year until starting to take cocaine in June 2011, said Mr Ekwall Tiwana, defending who concluded: “He had been injecting himself with crack cocaine every day for a fortnight before this incident. He had started mixing with drug addicts and criminals and got drawn into that world.”
Cooper pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and attempted burglary and fraud. He has been sentenced to six years and four months in prison.
