Retail giant Poundstretcher has been fined £65,000 after its working conditions in one of it’s Lincolnshire warehouses was described as a “disaster waiting to happen”. No5 Chambers barrister, Tim Pole, prosecuted in this case.
It was heard, at Lincoln Crown Court, an Envronmental Health Inspector from South Kesteven District Council visited the premise in June 2014 after receiving a telephone call from an employee concerned about the overstocking levels and items blocking fire exits.
Mr Pole said that the store manager admitted overstocking was an ongoing issue, part of the problems seemed to be that store managers did not have the power to refuse deliveries.
The court heard that Poundstretcher had previously been prosecuted for similar breaches at the same premises in 2011.
Poundstrecther Limited admitted two contraventions of Health and Safety regulations and one breach of duty to employees following the inspection in June 2014. They were fined £65,000 and ordered to pay costs of £13,968.
