Anthony Foley, 58, Birmingham, has been jailed for 20 months after admitting charges of bigamy and obtaining benefits by deception.

Birmingham Crown Court heard that Foley’s wife Maxine, who suffered from the condition Friedreich’s Ataxia, was admitted to a home in 2006 because she began to require 24-hour care.

A year later, Foley stopped visiting his wife, saying he had a new job overseas and also claimed he had been diagnosed with cancer. He had used his wife’s benefits to travel to Russia, where he met his next wife, Ms Kudinova.

The couple married, after Foley showed Registry Office Staff divorce documents from a previous marriage.

After a review of Maxine’s benefits, the DWP alerted the police and fraud investigators discovered Foley had made 221 withdrawals from her bank account, none of which had been passed to her or used to fund her care.

Foley admitted taking £29,593 in disability benefits, which his wife new nothing about.

Tim pole, defending said that Foley “deeply regretted” using Maxine’s benefits.

Recorder Mark Jackson sentended him to 20 months in prison saying, he “perpetrated a calculated transaction”
