A jury has ruled that James Walmsley, 24, caused a car crash that killed his friend, Frazer McCarthy, 21, when driving down the wrong way of a busy Merseyside road in May 2012.

Mr Walmsley, who suffered catastrophic head injuries, has been left severely injured and brain damaged. He was ruled unfit to stand trial, or enter a plea, so judges decided to hold a ‘fact-finding hearing’ at Liverpool Crown Court.

Mr Justice Turner said he was more than satisfied on evidence provided by doctors of the severity of Mr Walmsley’s condition, and due to this he has been given a complete discharge.
