Marcus Marcussen, a 91-year-old retired teacher who worked at Illmington Road Comprehensive School in Weoley Castle has been jailed for 9 years after being found guilty of 25 counts of indecent assault on boys.
A jury at Birmingham Crown Court heard that pupils were abused during and after PE lessons, and at a swimming club, when Marcussen worked at the school between 1945 and 1983.
Sarah Buckingham, prosecuting, told the court that the investigation began after one of the victim’s contacted police after suffering a breakdown. Another former pupil then came forward to also complain of being indecently assaulted in the 1970’s. The subsequent media coverage led to the remaining victims coming forward.
At the age of 91, Marcussen is the oldest person to be handed a prison sentence for the first time.
Sentencing, Judge Nicholas Webb said “You retain an acute intelligence and although you are physically frail, forty or fifty years ago I am sure you were a formidable presence in the classroom… all of the men who gave evidence, some now in their sixties and one or two in their seventies, have been affected for the worse by their experiences literally at your hands.”
