Kelly Emery, 34, Birmingham, has denied charges of manslaughter and child cruelty, following allegations that she deliberately gave her son methadone.
Emery has admitted counts of manslaughter on the grounds that she did not prevent him from accessing the methadone himself.
Fenton Hogan died aged 2 in July 2013, and a post mortem revealed that he had ingested methadone at least twice before his death.
Christopher Hotten QC, prosecuting, alleged in his opening speech that two dummies found at Fenton’s home were contaminated with traces of cocaine.
The jury heard that Emery led a “chaotic” lifestyle and was prescribed methadone as a heroin substitute in liquid form in bottles with child-proof tops.
