Carol Knotts, Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence Barrister at No5 Chambers has sold the white dress featured in the iconic 1970’s Athena Tennis Girl poster at auction for £15,500.

Carol made the dress when she was 12 years old, and lent it to her friend Fiona Butler, who is the model in the image. The poster went on to sell 2 million copies.

She decided to sell the dress, along with the racquet and 2 posters, saying “I’ve had the dress tucked away in a cupboard for all those years. It’s a little piece of tennis history and I hope someone might find it an interesting novelty item to buy.”

Fieldings Auctioneers, based in Stourbridge, West Midlands, said that dozens of people from all over the world were interested in the lot, which was sold to an anonymous buyer on the phone on Saturday 5th July, the day of the Wimbledon Ladies Single’s Final.
