No5 Chambers continues its proud tradition of supporting worthy causes, by committing to support Birmingham Citizens’ Advice Bureau as it prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary.

Birmingham CAB has set itself a fundraising target of £75,000 this year in line with its anniversary and No5 Chambers’ objective is to raise the sum of £10,000 via a combination of sponsorship and fundraising.

An outline calendar of events has been drawn up which will include:
•    A number of networking events
•    A golf day in Worcester in April
•    An art gallery launch event hosted by No5 Chambers
•    September celebratory events to mark the 75th birthday of Birmingham CAB
•    A number of sporting fundraising activities including a sky dive and the Birmingham half marathon

Tony McDaid, Practice Director of No5 Chambers, comments:  “We have involved ourselves in charitable endeavours for several years and, we have raised more than £85,000 for Marie Curie via white collar boxing events since 2011.  Having supported that worthy cause for the last three years, which we will continue to support in the future, we felt the need to lend our capabilities and enthusiasm to another organisation, especially as so many have felt the brunt of recessionary austerity.

“Many individuals turn to volunteer-led bodies like the Citizens’ Advice Bureau for advice in times of need and so we approached the team at the Birmingham branch to determine if it would be an appropriate relationship.  It soon became clear that it would be a good fit, especially as Birmingham CAB will be celebrating 75 years of helping the people of this City in the autumn.”

Birmingham Citizens Advice Bureau assists anyone living in the Birmingham area to access free, impartial advice on a range of issues, from debt and benefits, to housing, employment, immigration and consumer. As well as resolving the problems faced by clients who seek help, they aim to ensure the underlying policies that have caused problems are highlighted, addressed and bought to the attention of policy makers through campaigning.

Speaking at the offices in Corporation Street, Janice Nichols of Birmingham Citizens Advice Bureau says:  “Not many people realise that each Citizens Advice is a registered charity, relying upon donations and volunteers to allow us to help clients. Within Birmingham, we have seen an increase in both debt and benefit enquiries as well employment related issues. With the introduction of Welfare reform, including Personal Independence Payments, increasing sanctions made to peoples benefits and the ‘Bedroom tax’, we can only anticipate that the need for advice will continue at a steady pace. With this in mind, we are always looking for additional funding and innovative ways in which to raise funds to assist the people of Birmingham.

I am proud that Birmingham CAB has served the people of Birmingham for 75 years and we need support to do so for the next 75 years. That is one of the reasons why I am so pleased that No5 Chambers is rallying to our cause with fundraising initiatives this year.  I look forward to us working together and seeing their ideas and energy in action.”
