Gurdev Nagra has been spared jail after pleading guilty to two charges of assisting unlawful immigration and one charge of providing unlicensed immigration services.
Nagra and her late husband Duman Singh, who died last year of a terminal illness, filled in over 280 false applications in less that three years which purported to show applicants had been living in the UK for 14 years, which is the minimum length of time needed to grant permission to remain on residential qualifications.
The couple were arrested in September 2010 after the Home Office noted a large number of applicants using the same address, which was where the couple lived in Wolverhampton. The investigation found that each case filed by Nagra and Singh were earning them between £260 and £320.
Mark Kelly, defending Nagra, said “She was instructed by her husband on what to do and took no proactive steps whatsoever.” She had a previous good character and was given a 12-month jail sentence suspended for two years.
